And now some notes:

Note No. 1
The table starts with Terah, the father of Abraham. He is the person family members of Abrahamís relatives have as their common ancestor. Terahís children are Abraham, Nahor, Haran and Sarah.

Note No. 2
Terah is the 19th generation counted from Adam and Abraham therefore the 20th. The ancestors of Terah and Abraham are listed in
2.4 The time of Adamís creation
2.5 Bar chart of the lives of the 22 patriarchs.
The 21st patriarch is Isaac and the 22nd is Jacob.

Note No. 3
Bar charts showing other details of Abrahamís family are
2.6 Bar chart of the lives of Israelís patriarchs
2.7 Bar chart of the first Israelites
2.8 Bar chart of the Israelites
2.9 Bar chart of the Judges Ė from Moses to Salomon
2.10 Bar chart of Old Testament kings and prophets
2.11 Bar chart of Old Testament kings and prophets, No. 2

Note No. 4
In Genesis 20:12 we read the words of Abraham: "And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife." So Sarah is Abrahamís sister and became his wife.

Note No. 5
Abraham had 8 children. His oldest son was Ishmael; Ishmaelís mother was Hagar. His second son was Isaac; Isaacís mother was Sarah. And then Abraham had six sons from this second wife, Keturah.

Note No. 6
Abraham is the father of many nations. His first son Ishmael is already the father of several nations. His second son Isaac is the father of Esau, and Esau is the father of the Edomites. And Isaac is the father of Jacob, who was called Israel, and he is the father of the Israelites, the Jews. And the six sons of Abrahamís second wife Keturah are also fathers of nations, for example: the fourth son of Keturah, Midian, is the father of the Midianites. Abraham is not the father of the two nations of the Moabites and the Ammonites because Moab and Bennami were sons of Lot, Abrahamís nephew, and are therefore no descendants of Abraham, but descendants of his brother Haran.

Note No. 7
Tamar was the wife of Er and Er was the first son of Judah. Judah is the fourth son of Jacob, from Jacobís wife Leah. Judah is therefore a great-grandson of Abraham. The tribe of Judah is the tribe in the line of the Messiah. The Bible calls Tamar the daughter in law of Judah, because "the Lord slew Er," Tamar was a widow and had no child from Er, but still wanted to be a mother of the Messiah. Judah wanted to give a younger son of his, Shelah, to Tamar as husband, but that did not materialize. So Tamar made a plan and played the Harlot and became the mother of the fourth and the fifth son of Judah, Pharez and Zerah, they were twins. Pharez was an ancestor of Boaz, Obed, Jesse and David.

Note No. 8
So Tamarís first husband was Er, the first son of Judah, and after Erís death she became the wife of Judahís second son, Onan. Now Onan refused, in defiance of the ancient custom, to become father by Erís widow, Tamar. For this he was punished by death. The sudden death of his two sons so soon after their marriage with Tamar made Judah hesitate to give her the third son, thinking, very likely, according to a superstition, that either she herself or marriage with her had been the cause of their deaths. He therefore sent her to her father, with the promise that he would give her his youngest son as soon as he was grown up, though he never intended to do so. Desirous of retaining the family inheritance and name through children, Tamar waited until satisfied that Shelah was not to be given to her as a husband, and then determined to produce children from Judah himself, who had become a widower. So Tamar was the wife of two of Judahís sons and therefore called daughter in law of Judah.

Note No. 9
The Bible reports about Onan: "And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother." That is where the word onanism, masturbation, comes from. Genesis 38:9.

Note No. 10
Tamar ensnared Judah by pretending to be one of those women who were consecrated to the impure rites of Canaanitish worship. He gave her pledges, which she produced some three months after, when she was accused of un-chastity and sentenced to death by Judah. He acknowledged his own guilt, and the provocation he had furnished her to do wrong. Tamarís life was spared, and she became the mother of the twins Pharez and Zerah. Pharez became an ancestor of David, the ancestor of Jesus, the Lion of Judah.

Note No. 11
Tamar produced a nice kind of proof of paternity. This successful proof of paternity showed the guild of the father. He was found guilty and accepted it. Today now we have more possibilities to find people guilty of such things. But there could be cases where this finding guilty does not apply. Cases where the paternity can be proven but where no guilt is involved, because no guilt applies to the father. The example is the father of Moab and of Bennami, Lot. Genesis 19:33, "And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose."

Note No. 12
So today it might be proven that someone is the father of a child. But he might claim to know nothing about such accusations and he might speak the truth. To sentence a man for maintenance might not always be justified.

Note No. 13
Moab and Bennami are sons of Lot but they are also grandchildren of Lot because their mothers are Lot's daughters. Moab and Bennami are brothers because they have the same father, Lot, and they are also cousins, their mothers are sisters. Moab is also the uncle of Bennami because Bennami's mother is Moabs sister und Bennami is Moab's uncle because Moab's mother is his sister. Their mothers are therefore also their sisters.

Note No. 14
When cases of proof of paternity or rape are discussed, it might be a good idea to remember the daughters of Lot and also Tamar, the daughter in law of Judah, and especially Potipharís wife, Genesis 39:7-20, who cast her eyes upon Joseph, and she said, Lie with me, and he did not and was accused of rape.

Note No. 15
Speaking of rape, there is a second Tamar in the Bible. She is the daughter of David. She was violated by Amnon, her half-brother, and avenged by Absalom. Amnon actually committed two wrongs, first he raped Tamar and then he also chased her away. By being sent away it would inevitably be supposed that she had been guilty of some shameful conduct herself. This Tamar was also brave; she put ashes upon her head, rent her royal dress, laid her hand upon her head, and went on crying. 2 Samuel 13.

Note No. 16
So the above Genealogical table of Abraham and his family also shows the genealogy of David. David has Judah as an ancestor. Have a look at the fourth son of Jacob and there at the fourth son of Judah.

Note No. 17
For the genealogy of Jesus see Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38.

Note No. 18
Abraham's nephew Lot is a son of Abraham's brother Haran. Lot's second son is Bennami and he is the father of the nation called the children of Ammon, the Ammonites. Their chief town was Rabbath Ammon, modern Amman, the capital of the country Jordan.
